Meet David Dehez — A Discreet Force Behind Some of Belgium’s Finest Sport Horses
365 Auctions
This week on 365-Auctions.com, we are proud to present an exclusive collection of horses from the stables of David Dehez — a name that may not always be in the spotlight, but whose horses have quietly shaped the Belgian sport horse scene.
We sat down with David to learn more about his journey, his philosophy, and what makes his breeding program so special.
“Breeding came naturally — it was a way to make the most of exceptional genetics.”
“I’ve been in the horse business for over twenty years,” explains David. “In the beginning, I focused mainly on trading. Breeding came later, quite naturally, because I had access to some exceptional bloodlines through mares I’d bought for the trade. It seemed a shame not to make use of that potential, so I started embryo transfers with mares after their sport careers.”
A Modern Farm with a Strong Vision
Today, David and his partner Sarah Toussaint manage around 100 hectares and recently built a state-of-the-art facility. Although they keep a low profile at competitions, their horses have spoken for themselves:
“We’re not always in the limelight, but we’re known for the quality of our horses. Several have won the seven-year-old cycle or stood out among the young horses. In Belgium, people associate us with names like Best de la Hart Z, Uschi 75, and Cœur de Cachas.”
A Reputation Built on Trust and Results
“I come from a modest background — my parents had a few leisure horses, and my grandfather traded horses on a small scale. We built everything ourselves. Today, we have around 200 horses, though I plan to scale down. My clients are mostly professionals, many from France. What matters most to me is offering good young horses with great potential and honest value for money.”
Adapting and Evolving
“At first, I was purely trading — buy and sell. Later, I wanted to keep the top horses and try to reach the big leagues myself. But our structure wasn’t solid enough at the time. So I changed direction: instead of chasing a few big wins, I now focus on selling more horses at fair prices. It allows me to work with more professionals, build long-term trust, and reach strong results in a sustainable way. I’m also more open to selling talented horses early on — it’s better for everyone.”
Local Roots, International Reach
“I work with several breeders from my area. There are outstanding bloodlines here that are sometimes less developed than in Flanders. I collaborate, for example, with Vincent Jourdan and Catherine Winand from Élevage de Luxe (formerly Élevage du Pachis). Together, we’ve produced excellent horses, like Exquise du Pachis, who now competes at five-star level in the United States.”
Quiet Excellence
“I’m not someone who needs attention — I prefer that the horses speak for us. Many that have passed through our hands are now jumping five stars, and that’s the best publicity you can get.”
